Jinwoo Chong: Clock In: Jinwoo Chong’s Playlist for 'Flux' (0 comment)
I had my first inklings of the novel that eventually became Flux about a year after I was laid off from my first job after college, the result of a corporate takeover of my company that eliminated my entire department. While a tough hurdle to overcome at twenty-one years old, I learned a lot about self-sufficiency....

I consumed this fascinating book in two days. Candice Millard should be held in the same ranks as Erik Larson (Devil in the White City) and Hampton Sides (In the Kingdom of Ice) for writing fascinating and fast-paced nonfiction. She tells the story of the "attempted" assassination of President James Garfield and the aftermath in an equally page-turning and educational manner. Millard makes U.S. history as much fun as a thriller.    Recommended By Jeffrey J., Powells.com

Publisher Comments

James A. Garfield was one of the most extraordinary men ever elected president. Born into abject poverty, he rose to become a wunderkind scholar, a Civil War hero, and a renowned and admired reformist congressman. Nominated for president against his will, he engaged in a fierce battle with the corrupt political establishment. But four months after his inauguration, a deranged office seeker tracked Garfield down and shot him in the back.

But the shot didn't kill Garfield. The drama of what happened subsequently is a powerful story of a nation in turmoil. The unhinged assassin's half-delivered strike shattered the fragile national mood of a country so recently fractured by civil war, and left the wounded president as the object of a bitter behind-the-scenes struggle for power — over his administration, over the nation's future, and, hauntingly, over his medical care. A team of physicians administered shockingly archaic treatments, to disastrous effect. As his condition worsened, Garfield received help: Alexander Graham Bell, the inventor of the telephone, worked around the clock to invent a new device capable of finding the bullet.

Meticulously researched, epic in scope, and pulsating with an intimate human focus and high-velocity narrative drive, The Destiny of the Republic will stand alongside The Devil in the White City and The Professor and the Madman as a classic of narrative history.

Review

"One of the many pleasures of Candice Millard's new book, Destiny of the Republic, [is] that she brings poor Garfield to life — and a remarkable life it was....Fascinating... Outstanding....Millard has written us a penetrating human tragedy." The New York Times Book Review

Review

"A spirited tale that intertwines murder, politics and medical mystery, Candice Millard leaves us feeling that Garfield's assassination deprived the nation not only of a remarkably humble and intellectually gifted man but one who perhaps bore the seeds of greatness....splendidly drawn portraits....Alexander Graham Bell makes a bravura appearance." The Wall Street Journal

Review

"Fascinating......Gripping.....Stunning....has a much bigger scope than the events surrounding Garfield's slow, lingering death. It is the haunting tale of how a man who never meant to seek the presidency found himself swept into the White House....Ms. Millard shows the Garfield legacy to be much more important than most of her readers knew it to be." The New York Times

Review

"In this brilliant and riveting work, Candice Millard demonstrates the power of narrative nonfiction. Through exhaustive research and flawless storytelling, she has brought to life one of the most harrowing and fascinating sagas in American history — a saga filled with political intrigue, a mad assassin, and a frantic scientific struggle to save the life of a noble president. This is a book that is impossible to put down." David Grann, author of The Lost City of Z

When I pick up Destiny of the Republic, I never thought I would find myself so invested in the story of James Garfield's life, and death. His short Presidency, in my opinion, made him little more than a footnote in the history of the US, but as I read, I discovered a deep admiration for a man who never aspired to the highest office in the US and began to feel an abiding sadness that his life, and Presidency, was cut so short. Destiny of the Republic is a gripping, heartbreaking read. It's well written and will keep anyone who loves a good drama engrossed from beginning to end.

This is a well-written examination of the mortal travesty that befell a little known president - who held great promise as the nation's political leader - only months into office.

This was an amazing non-fiction, political, social, biographical thriller. This is right up there with Devil in the White City. There was a ton of suspense, and fascinating science. I'd highly recommend this book.

This well researched and equally well written book, clearly demonstrates the value of new technologies and the impact they have on how history unfolds. This topic and period of history that Millard choose to view, fills an important gap in the common understanding that the average American has between the time of Lincoln's assassination and the new age beginning at the turn of the century. A full Garfield presidency could have advanced American society tremendously but the circumstances that brought about his untimely death remind of how short sighted we can be.

This book represents more than just a glimpse into the life of an assassinated president. It captures the political and social climate of his times. Although not short of historical facts, the lively prose has the tone of a thriller as Millard weaves the story of Guiteau, the assassin, throughout the narrative of President Garfield. Although what occurs when their paths cross is well-known, the author creates such tension leading up to the assassination that the reader secretly wishes for another outcome. The assassination occurs midpoint in the text followed by exploration of Garfield's medical care. The author seems to devote much time to telling Alexander Graham Bell's story which seems a little out a place but is equally as interesting as other aspects of the time. Overall, a wonderful read.

Only seventeen years after the assassination of Lincoln traumatized the nation, madman Charles Guiteau shot President Garfield. The wound was survivable, indeed, many Civil War veterans sustained similar wounds and lived normal lives. But in the confusion surrounding the shooting of a president, one of the few doctors who did not subscribe to the principle of sterilizing hands and medical equipment managed to intimidate everyone into allowing him to take charge of the President's medical care. Candice Millard tells the story in a clear narrative way that was so full of fascinating details that I kept stopping to check facts. How did she know what Guiteau was thinking or that Vice President Chester Arthur was in tears? Were these colorful speculations that the author tossed in using artistic license? Not at all. Every statement is backed up by endnotes. Millard consulted diaries, letters, court testimony, newspaper accounts and she documents everything rigorously. I usually find 19th century history a bit of a snooze, but Destiny of the Republic had me hooked from the start.
