Synopses & Reviews
DOG PEOPLE celebrates the extraordinary human/canine bond that has been successfully maintained for more than 12,000 years. Here, in 20 humorous, compassionate, and wise personal essays and 17 portfolios of photographs and paintings, are specially commissioned "companion pieces" from playwright Edward Albee, art critic Robert Rosenblum, New Yorker cartoonist Danny Shanahan, humorist Cynthia Heimel, and writers such as Jane Smiley, Bob Shacochis, Nancy Friday, Frederick Busch, and Ann Beattie--dog people every one. Each of the writers and artists who contributed to Dog People gives voice to the powerful, undiluted feelings dogs engender in us.
A visual as well as literary Best-of-Show, Dog People includes William Wegman's pictures of his celebrated Weimaraners, portraits of eleven artists' dogs by Timothy Greenfield-Sanders, and suites of paintings by renowned artists, including Jamie Wyeth, David Hockney, Robert Andrew Parker, and Christine Herman Merrill. With a chorusing kennel of sheepdogs, retrievers, malamutes, pugs, bulldogs, lap dogs, and mixed breeds, Dog People creates a lasting testament not only to dogs, but also to the joyful nature of our companionship with them.
Synopsis
As Edward Albee puts it in this timeless collection of pieces about dogs, there are "those of us who feel incomplete withoutt the company of a dog or two." Those same people will feel incomplete without this book, now in paperback. Along with portraits of dogs are ruminations by such dog-devoted authors as Anne Beattie, Nancy Friday, and Jane Smiley. Daniel Pinkwater describes the joys of strolling with his ever-willing-to-walk dog and Danny Shanahan explains "how to read your dog," complete with sketches. These, together with the work of forty artists, including William Wegman's photographs of famous Fay and Jamie Wyeth's dog paintings, give voice and image to the powerful, undiluted emotions that human beings experience when dogs are among them.
