Synopsis
Excerpt from Early's Attack Upon Washington, July, 1864
The general plan agreed upon for the campaign of 1864 was to concentrate all the Union forces and offensive operations upon two great objectives, - the Confederate armies of Lee and Johnston. While Grant assumed command in the East, it was left to Sherman, with the Western army of men, to move against Johnston, about strong.
How well Sherman did his part, we cannot now st0p to con sider, beyond recalling his successful mountain campaign and his arrival before Atlanta in July. The fall of that almost vital centre, and the march from Atlanta to the sea, had not yet occurred.
