Synopsis
Gabriel Marklin (17771857), bondson fr n V sterbotten, kom som student till Uppsala 1803. Tanken var att han skulle bli pr st men intresset f r naturvetenskap tog verhand och han blev utan att ha avlagt n gon formell examen k nd f r sina kunskaper inom bland annat entomologi och paleontologi. Framf r allt var han k nd f r sin iver att samla naturf rem l och l rda skrifter. Han gjorde m nga och l nga vandringar inom och utom Sverige i insamlingssyfte. Hans samlingar av naturf rem l, som f r sin tid ans gs vara de st rsta i privat go i Sverige, finns bevarade p bland annat Evolutionsmuseet i Uppsala och Naturhistoriska museet i Stockholm. Kungliga biblioteket har en stor samling avhandlingar efter honom och ytterligare en samling finns p Yale University i USA. Marklin gjorde ocks betydelsefulla insatser som bibliograf. r 1829 utn mndes han till adjunkt vid Kungliga Vetenskaps-Societeten i Uppsala. Han promoverades till hedersdoktor det r han dog. En tanke bakom boken har varit att s l ngt m jligt genom studium av prim ra k llor skildra Marklins liv. Han har l mnat efter sig en stor m ngd dokument, dagb cker och brev p Uppsala universitetsbibliotek och Kungliga biblioteket i Stockholm. Marklin var en originell person som levde under enkla omst ndigheter. I vissa skildringar av hans liv har anekdoterna tagit verhanden.
