Synopses & Reviews
From the author of The Christmas Cookie Club, a touching novel about two sisters struggling to understand the meaning of family.A Gift for My Sister is a fast paced, riveting page turner that poses the larger questions of where did I come from, how did I become me, and how do we form a family? It’s a tale told by two fatherless daughters struggling with family curses, eccentric luck, and the complicated multiculturalism that is hallmark of our era.
Tara and Sky, first introduced to readers in Pearlman’s highly successful The Christmas Cookie Club, are disconnected sisters. Sky, obedient and cautious, has planned and achieved the traditional dream: she is happily married, has a young daughter, lives in a condo on a beach, and has her dream job. Rebellious and impetuous Tara, who got pregnant in high school, has a blossoming music career with Aaron, the man she fell in love with when he was just out of juvenile prison.
After a series of tragedies changes everything, the family, including Tara and Sky’s mom and Tara’s musical co-horts, gets thrown together and must caravan across the United States during the rap crew’s cross-country tour.
Along the way we meet a number of interesting characters. The tensions between the two sisters erupt when in the middle of their fighting, a near drowning incident forces them to confront their feelings and their issues, with the outcome uncertain.
