Synopses & Reviews
A key debate in the 1980s and 1990s revolves around the growing power of globalization and, in the European context, Europeanization. Denmark, Norway and Sweden lie at the heart of the debate over whether the end of the nation-state has arrived or if national distinctions remain paramount. This volume answers the question of whether or not we are witnessing the end of the social democratic era by exploring the development of Scandinavian economic policy and welfare state/social policy.
Synopsis
Nine European and American scholars of political science, sociology, economics, and journalism contribute chapters that join in the debate about whether the 21st century will see the end of social democracy as it is currently known in countries like Denmark, Norway, and Sweden. This book explores the development of Scandinavian economic policy, welfare state/ social policy, and social democratic strategies, arguing that the Scandinavian social democracy is currently under global pressure, but appears to remain strong in the new global and European order.
