andlt;bandgt;andlt;BRandgt; The New Mortalandlt;/bandgt; andlt;BRandgt; andlt;BRandgt;WHOand#8217;S THAT?and#8221; ATHENA ASKED, GESTURING toward an unfamiliar boy as she plunked her tray onto the table where she and her goddessgirl friends always sat for lunch. The entire cafeteria at Mount Olympus Academy was buzzing with excitement over him. Usually she didnand#8217;t pay much attention to boys, but even andlt;iandgt;sheandlt;/iandgt; couldnand#8217;t help noticing this one. Dressed in a lion-skin capeand#8212;its jaws fit his head like a helmetand#8212;he was tall with dark, curly hair, and bursting with muscles like Atlas, the schooland#8217;s champion weightlifter.andlt;BRandgt; andlt;BRandgt;Aphrodite arched a perfectly shaped eyebrow. and#8220;You havenand#8217;t heard? His nameand#8217;s Heracles. He was admitted to the Academy only this morning.and#8221; A look of disapproval came into her lovely blue eyes as she glanced at him. and#8220;Iand#8217;ll admit heand#8217;s cute, but he has absolutely no sense of fashion.and#8221;andlt;BRandgt; andlt;BRandgt;Athena took a bite of her hero sandwich. A lion cape andlt;iandgt;wasandlt;/iandgt; perhaps overkill as a fashion statement.andlt;BRandgt; andlt;BRandgt;and#8220;I heard heand#8217;s a skilled archer,and#8221; said Artemis. and#8220;But Iand#8217;ll believe it when I see it.and#8221;andlt;BRandgt; andlt;BRandgt; She frowned in his direction. and#8220;Word is that heand#8217;s mortal, just like Orion. So maybe heand#8217;s a liar, too.and#8221; Orion had been her disappointing first crush, too stuck on himself to notice anyone elseand#8217;s feelingsand#8212;especially andlt;iandgt;hersandlt;/iandgt;. Now she tended to look upon all boys with suspicion, particularly those who reminded her of Orion in any way.andlt;BRandgt; andlt;BRandgt;Persephone took a sip from her carton of nectar. and#8220;So heand#8217;s mortal and he dresses weird. That doesnand#8217;t mean he isnand#8217;t nice.and#8221; She was sensitive about stuff like that. Probably because andlt;iandgt;herandlt;/iandgt; crush, Hades, had often been misunderstood just because he came from the Underworld.andlt;BRandgt; andlt;BRandgt;A burst of admiring laughter came from the table where Heracles sat, drawing the girlsand#8217; eyes. He seemed to have wasted no time in making new friends among the godboys. Several of them, including Hades; Artemisand#8217;s twin brother, Apollo; Ares; and Poseidon were hanging on his every word. Athena couldnand#8217;t quite hear what Heracles was saying, but whatever it was probably involved weapons, war, sports, or hunting. In her experience, those were the topics that interested godboys most. Sure enough, moments later Heracles passed around his big, knobby club, which the boys oohed and aahed over. Not to be outdone, Poseidon showed off his trident, and Apollo, his bow.andlt;BRandgt; andlt;BRandgt;Aphrodite nudged Athena. and#8220;So, whatand#8217;s your opinion?and#8221;andlt;BRandgt; andlt;BRandgt;Thinking she must have missed part of the conversation, Athena asked, and#8220;About what?and#8221;andlt;BRandgt; andlt;BRandgt;and#8220;About Heracles.and#8221;andlt;BRandgt; andlt;BRandgt;Aphrodite, Artemis, and Persephone leaned toward her, as if anxious to hear what she had to say. Athena hesitated. She could well remember how nervous she felt when she first came to MOA less than a year ago. Most of the godboys and goddessgirls here, including her three best friends, had been together for years by then. They were all so beautiful, handsome, gifted, and amazing. If sheand#8217;d suspected at the time that they were discussing herand#8212;sizing her up and making judgmentsand#8212;she wouldand#8217;ve felt way more nervous.andlt;BRandgt; andlt;BRandgt;and#8220;Maybe we should try to put ourselves in andlt;iandgt;hisandlt;/iandgt; sandals and wonder what heand#8217;s thinking of us, instead of the other way around,and#8221; she suggested. and#8220;Heand#8217;s probably wondering if weand#8217;re all going to like him. Perhaps heand#8217;s trying to impress those godboys.and#8221;andlt;BRandgt; andlt;BRandgt;Aphrodite blinked. and#8220;I never thought of that.and#8221;andlt;BRandgt; andlt;BRandgt;Persephone smiled at Athena in admiration. and#8220;Thatand#8217;s beyond brainy thinking, even for you.and#8221;andlt;BRandgt; andlt;BRandgt;and#8220;Words of wisdom from the goddessgirl of wisdom herself!and#8221; added Artemis.andlt;BRandgt; andlt;BRandgt;and#8220;Thanks,and#8221; Athena told them. The praise was nice, but honestly, although she knew she was brainy, she wasnand#8217;t so sure she deserved the title of goddessgirl of andlt;iandgt;wisdomandlt;/iandgt;. If she were truly wise, she wouldnand#8217;t have made all the mistakes sheand#8217;d made since sheand#8217;d been here at MOAand#8212;like flooding the Earth with inventions, taking on too many classes and extracurriculars, and turning Medusaand#8217;s hair into snakes. Besides, words meant nothing without action. So far, she hadnand#8217;t done anything herself to welcome Heracles. Well, she could change that.andlt;BRandgt; andlt;BRandgt; She finished off her hero sandwich, hoping it would make her feel a little more heroic. Then, gathering her courage, she stood up from the table. and#8220;Iand#8217;m going over to say hi to him. You know, welcome him to the Academy.and#8221; She hesitated a moment. Putting herself forward like that didnand#8217;t come easy to herand#8212;especially with boys. As her friends looked at her in surprise, she hinted, and#8220;Anyone want to come with me?and#8221;andlt;BRandgt; andlt;BRandgt; Before the others could reply, the school intercom crackled to life. There was a tapping sound, as if someone was repeatedly poking at the button. Then Principal Zeusand#8217;s voice boomed out of the speaker over the cafeteria door, making everyone jump. and#8220;IS THIS THING ON?and#8221; andlt;iandgt;Tap tap tap.andlt;/iandgt; and#8220;MS. HYDRA?and#8221; andlt;iandgt;Tap tap tap.andlt;/iandgt; and#8220;YOU SURE?and#8221; After some more crackling, he finally thundered out his message: and#8220;CALLING ATHENA! REPORT TO MY OFFICE. PRONTO. ON THE DOUBLE!and#8221; A pause. and#8220;OH YEAH, AND BY THE WAY, THIS IS PRINCIPAL ZEUS, YOUR DEAR OLand#8217; DAD, IN CASE YOU DIDNand#8217;T GUESS!and#8221;andlt;BRandgt; andlt;BRandgt;Every eye in the cafeteria swung her way. Athena gulped. Zeus was never one to say please, especially if he was andlt;iandgt;disandlt;/iandgt;pleased about something. After all, he was King of the Gods and Ruler of the Heavens, so manners were not his first priority.andlt;BRandgt; andlt;BRandgt;and#8220;Change of plans, everyone. Iand#8217;ll see you later.and#8221; Leaving her tray on the table, Athena hurried out the door. Even thoughand#8212;or maybe andlt;iandgt;becauseandlt;/iandgt;and#8212; Principal Zeus was her dad, she worried about pleasing him more than anyone else at MOA did. Her stomach did acrobatic flips as she rushed down the hall to his office. She racked her brain trying to think if sheand#8217;d done something wrong. She was making straight As, so surely none of the teachers had complained. But her dad wasnand#8217;t big on friendly fatherly talks or idle chitchat, either. So what could he possibly want?andlt;BRandgt; andlt;BRandgt;and#169; 2011 Joan Holub
