Harper C.: Five Book Friday: Uncanny Graphic Novels (0 comment)
We are in the thick of winter here in the Pacific Northwest, which means it's dark, damp, and chilly. Rather than escaping to stories with warmer, brighter climates, I personally want nothing more than to dive deep into gothic and uncanny fiction as the wind rattles my windows at night...

Publisher Comments

Poor, orphaned Harry Potter is stuck living with his miserable relatives until salvation arrives in the form of letter: He's been invited to attend the prestigious Hogwarts School for Witchcraft and Wizardry. From that point on your child will follow Harry into a world of mystery, magic, and intrigue she won't soon forget!

Review

"[T]he rapturous reception of the Harry Potter books is heartening, because J.K. Rowling is a literary artist, and these three books possess more imaginative life than the majority of novels that are published in this country in any given year. They are full of marvelous invention and humor and fun, but they have more than that." Lee Siegel, The New Republic (read the entire New Republic review here)

Review

"A wonderful first novel....Harry is destined for greatness....Much like Roald Dahl, J.K. Rowling has a gift for keeping the emotions, fears, and triumphs of her characters on a human scale, even while the supernatural is popping out all over." Michael Winerip, The New York Times Book Review

Review

"Obviously, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone should make any modern 11-year-old a very happy reader. The novel moves quickly, packs in everything from a boa constrictor that winks to a melancholy Zen-spouting centaur to an owl postal system, and ends with a scary surprise." Michael Dirda, The Washington Post Book World

Synopsis

Harry Potter spent ten long years living with Mr. and Mrs. Dursley, an aunt and uncle whose outrageous favoritism of their perfectly awful son Dudley leads to some of the most inspired dark comedy since Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. But fortunately for Harry, he's about to be granted a scholarship to a unique boarding school called THE HOGWORTS SCHOOL OF WITCHCRAFT AND WIZARDRY, where he will become a school hero at the game of Quidditch (a kind of aerial soccer played high above the ground on broomsticks), he will make some wonderful friends, and, unfortunately, a few terrible enemies. For although he seems to be getting your run-of-the-mill boarding school experience (well, ok, even that's pretty darn out of the ordinary), Harry Potter has a destiny that he was born to fulfill. A destiny that others would kill to keep him from.

Synopsis

What did Harry Potter know about magic? He was stuck with the decidedly un-magical Dursleys, who hated him. He slept in a closet and ate their leftovers. But an owl messenger changes all that, with an invitation to attend the Hogwarts School for Wizards and Witches, where it turns out Harry is already famous.. . . Full color.

This book is a little slow, but it definitely picks up at the end, and so much of the rest of the series springs off of what we learn here.

I adored the entire Harry Potter series and am excited to dive into the magic of Rowling's world anew now that my niece is old enough to appreciate the series! Picking up the first book tomorrow so we can begin our journey together!

J. K. Rowling’s first Harry Potter book was interesting, but lacked of a true storyline in my opinion. I found myself daydreaming while flipping through the pages and then having to re-read them when I figured out what I was doing. Although this story did capture my interest at points, I would recommend it for younger teenage boys; I personally thought the book was a bit too long for me. Harry Potter is about a young boy named Harry, who learns he is a wizard. In the second chapter we learn he was abused by the Dursley family, who took Harry in when his parents died; “He found a pair of socks under his bed, after pulling a spider off one of them, put them on. Harry was used to spiders, because the cupboard under the stairs were full of them and that was were he slept.” A little bit after it reads, “Don’t ask questions— that was the first rule of the quiet life with the Dursleys” , which made me think of a boy trapped and had nowhere to turn. He was also bullied by his cousin Dudley, before Hagrid (a giant man) found Harry and took him to Hogwarts (a wizard’s school). Although throughout this book it does get a bit exciting, I was not at all in a hurry to finish it. I don’t know if I’ll be reading the next Harry Potter book soon. Review by: Hannah Smith

J.K. Rowling is one of the few, if she got togeather with Stephan King. WOW, that would be worth reading, no matter.what.

This delightfully wonderful first book captures the hearts of everyone and keeps the pages turning. The reader is introduced to a cast of characters that set the tone of adventure, magic, love and friendship. J.K.Rowling has set down her name in stone as being one of the most accomplished writers in history.
