Synopsis
Excerpt from History of Louisiana, From Its First Discovery and Settlement to the Present Time
Louisiana having been formerly connected with Canada and the northern parts of America while they were under the dominion of France, it seems proper to take some notice of the early settlements in those extensive countries. In 1504, within seven years of the discovery Of the Con tinent, the mariners of Brittany resorted to New foundland for the purpose of fishing. The island of Cape Breton received its name from them; and in France they were generally regarded as the discoverers of the country, though it could not be denied that the Cabots had first visited it.
