Synopses & Reviews

Synopsis

Scream meets Happy Death Day in this terrifying stand-alone horror novel from YA scream queen Danielle Valentine.

Alice Lawrence is the sole witness in her sister's murder trial.

And in the year since Claire's death, Alice's life has completely fallen apart. Her parents have gotten divorced, she's moved into an apartment that smells like bologna, and she is being forced to face her sister's killer and a courtroom full of people who doubt what she saw in the corn maze a year prior.

Claire was an all-American girl, beautiful and bubbly, and a theater star. Alice was a nerd who dreamed of becoming a forensic pathologist and would rather stay at home to watch her favorite horror movies than party. Despite their differences, they were bonded by sisterhood and were each other's best friends.

Until Claire was taken away from her.

On the first day of the murder trial, as Alice prepares to give her testimony, she is knocked out by a Sidney Prescott look-alike in the courthouse bathroom. When she wakes up, it is Halloween morning a year earlier, the same day Claire was murdered. Alice has until midnight to save her sister and find the real killer before he claims another victim.

Synopsis

Scream meets Happy Death Day in this terrifying stand-alone horror novel from YA scream queen Danielle Valentine.

"This terrifying book reads like a horror movie. No, wait. It has the suspense and shocks and screams of TEN horror movies in one. Great nasty fun " --R.L. Stine, author of Goosebumps and Fear Street

“ ‘If you don’t come with me, I might die.’ Those were the last words my sister ever said to me.” Nerdy horror movie lover Alice watches her sister’s murder on Halloween night in a corn maze. One year later, she’s set to testify against the accused but before she can take the stand, a Sidney Prescott look-a-like knocks her unconscious in the bathroom of the courthouse. Alice is transported back to the night of the murder and the clock starts ticking. Can she figure out who the killer really is before midnight and also save her sister? HOW TO SURVIVE YOUR MURDER is a fun YA horror book. The pace keeps up well throughout with some twists and turns that culminate in a surprising ending. Tons of horror/slasher movie references litter this book, so if you’re a movie buff, you’ll likely find extra enjoyment. The book reads a lot like a movie – I was yelling at the book in my head… “don’t do that” or “don’t go in there” and it felt the same as reacting to a movie. I’m not super huge into horror movies but still knew almost all the references so things made sense. Someone who is not a movie watcher at all may lose some of the context. There’s definitely a nostalgic feel. Some parts felt predictable but not so much that it ruined the book for me overall. I found HOW TO SURVIVE YOUR MURDER to be a fun horror read and would recommend to those looking for a YA horror book, especially anyone who is a fan of horror/slasher movies.

I have to say this book is a quick moving wild ride. I loved all of the old school slasher references and the theme of the rules of being a Final Girl. The writing was excellent and I enjoyed the twist at the end. Alice has always been into horror movies, especially slashers with Final Girls. Alice and her friends are even working on a podcast to dissect true crime and slashers to pull out the rules to be a Final Girl. Until the night Alice and her sister go to a Halloween party and Claire is murdered before Alice’s eyes. It’s time for the trial and Alice is the key witness to convict Owen, but there isn’t much evidence he committed the other crimes that night. A Sidney Prescott lookalike talks to Alice at the courthouse and before she knows it she has been knocked out and sent back to the night her sister died with the task of figuring out what happened before midnight. But this isn’t a vision, this do over is for keeps.

How to Survive Your Murder follows Alice, whose sister Claire was murdered in a Halloween corn maze one year ago. Since the death of her sister Alice's life has fallen apart. Alice is the only witness and is convinced she knows what happened. During the murder trial she hits her head in the bathroom and is suddenly transported back a year. She has only until midnight to figure out the truth behind Claire's murder. As the bodies pile up, Alice realizes that she did not know her friends and family as well as she had thought. Alice is a horror super nerd, so the slasher films of the 90s are referenced heavily making this book fun and nostalgic. I liked Alice's character and sense of humor. I loved the premise and all the twists and turns taken by the story. I did not guess the killer until close to the end. There were some glaring plot holes and an ending that was unsettling, but it is a horror novel after all. How to Survive Your Murder is an entertaining, edge-of-your-seat horrorfest arriving just in time for the spooky season. Thank you to BookishFirst for a copy to review.
