"A book that grabs you by the throat and doesnt let go. The Hunt is both terrifying and sublime, with every page evoking that fragile, yet unyielding thing we call humanity."

—Andrea Cremer, New York Times bestselling author of the Nightshade Trilogy

In a world where humans have been eaten to near extinction, seventeen-year-old Gene has only managed to survive by painstakingly concealing his true species. If the bloodthirsty creatures surrounding him knew what he really was—a human—he would be devoured swiftly and terribly. When Gene is chosen to participate in the government-sponsored hunt for the last remaining humans, it thrusts him into the fight of his life—and into the path of a human girl who makes him feel things he never thought possible. Now, he must learn the art of the hunt and elude his fellow hunters whose suspicions about his true human nature are growing. But most importantly, Gene and the girl he loves must find a way to forge a life together in a brutal world thats bent on their destruction.

With his propulsive plot and highly developed characters, readers will find it impossible to resist the vivid world Andrew Fukuda has created in this stunning standout debut. Readers craving a book that grips and mesmerizes them like The Hunger Games will love The Hunt.

“Chilling, inventive, and utterly unputdownable. Readers, proceed…if you dare. This book will bleed into your nightmares.” —Becca Fitzpatrick, New York Times bestselling author of Hush, Hush

“In this terrifying and inventive adventure, Fukuda turns the vampire novel inside out…With an exciting premise fueled by an underlying paranoia, fear of discovery, and social claustrophobia, this thriller lives up to its potential while laying groundwork for future books.” -Publishers Weekly

“The story is bona fide creepy, and as it builds to its cliffhanger ending (which delivers quite a good twist), readers will be torn between hoping Gene can maintain the ruse and that he will take on the bloodsuckers already. As revolutions go, this one is well worth keeping on your radar.” - Booklist

“Fukuda takes the feeling of isolation that dominates adolescence and builds a world around it in a novel where the tension rarely slackens.  He turns up the violence a notch from THE HUNGER GAMES with language that is as graphic as it is eloquent.  Readers will hanker for answers as they'll discover a kindred spirit in Gene, who so eloquently describes the feeling of being an island in the middle of a vast ocean.” -Maximum Shelf

The Hunt features an original spin on the trendy vampire novel that surprised and intrigued me. Even more surprising, author Andrew Fukuda creates a sinister tone and action-driven unpredictable plot while avoiding almost all paranormal novel cliches. In The Hunt, humans are almost entirely extinct, and the few who remain must pass themselves off as vampires to survive. When I realized the inciting event was a "Let's Find and Kill Some Humans" hunt I thought, "oh. Great. A Hunger Games copycat." I was wrong. The Hunt is more creepy than political, the characters have more depth, and there are several surprise twists that keep the reader guessing as to who is good and who is evil. Fukuda's use of very small, yet significant details creates an almost horror story mood for much of the second half of the novel. I'm also surprised that I am looking forward to the sequel.

My #1 problem with The Hunt was Gene. First of all, for someone who's supposed to be "intelligent," he was way too stupid. Like, seriously? Is he considered intelligent because everyone else is stupider? He was so freaking slow. I couldn't see how he wasn't caught years ago. I also hated how easily manipulated he was by Ashley. I disliked Ashley, too, for forcing him to choose in the first place. And I can't believe how willing he was to sacrifice the hepers. He could have told them about the map, told them about the hunt, or made sure that they didn't get the false note. It's not like someone would have blamed him for it. But he didn't even feel guilty about leading them to their dooms. I was tempted to slam the book down, and throw it across the room because that bothered the heck out of me. There were also quite a lot of plot holes. For example, when Gene was at the facility without any water for two days, he would only pass out when it was convenient for him. In the library, by himself? Passed out cold. But while walking two miles in the desert after two days of no water? Nope, he's completely fine. How does that even make sense? The vampires in The Hunt, were definitely unique, but quite ridiculous, too. Some of their habits I found rather disgusting (like the neck snapping thing as well as the drooling). The ending was a big shocker, and I totally wasn't expecting it. It was a huge cliffhanger, and I actually turned to the next page, expecting there to be an explanation for the madness. The sole reason I will read the sequel will be because I want an explanation for the ending. I won't lie. I didn't love the book, but there were lots of twist and turns that kept me on my toes. Hwa Sun :)

A very intriguing book, indeed. I didn't always love it, true, but this was unlike anything I've ever read before -- and that fact alone makes this book extraordinary. This is a very visceral, completely fresh story that will strike a chord with anyone who thinks they've seen all there is to be had from the vampire fiction genre.

A bit predictable so far. Kinda like vampire Hunger Games. Not many unexpected plot twists. I'll probably read the next one, as I suspect it might get better. Three stars might be a bit generous, as there were definitely aspects of the book that I thought should have been tweaked, to say the least.

After Gene's family dies, he's on his own. Living his life as an impostor, with no one look after him but himself. But he knows the rules like the back of his hand. He has to, to blend in so well with them. To not be mauled by them. Everything goes as planned until he is chosen to take part in 'The Hunt'. At first I thought this book was about werewolves, but I was pleasantly surprised it's about vampires! It is disgusting in some parts with the blood and saliva dripping down their chins. They eat like ravenous wild animals. But I loved it, lol! It has a male's point of view, which I don't see very often. The end of the book left a lot of questions, with that cliffhanger ending. Thank you St. Martin's Griffin and NetGalley for providing a digital copy of the book!
