Synopses & Reviews
Located at the confluence of three creeks, amid the rich agricultural soil of Eastern Washington's Palouse region, Pullman seemed destined to flourish. From its founding in the 1880s, growth was spurred by the discovery of artesian wells, its selection as the location of the State Agricultural College, and the building of rail lines through the town. Pullman, named for railroad car manufacturer George Pullman, became a thriving center of commerce, agriculture, and education. Today Pullman remains a vibrant commercial agricultural center, built upon wheat, peas, and lentils, with a downtown nestled among four hills. Pullman is home to cutting edge technology companies and a major research institution, Washington State University. Its rich heritage in agriculture, education, and technology guarantees its future as a highly successful 21st century city.

A new book about Pullman by late professor Robert Luedeking and emeritus professor Edwin P. Garretson features more than 200 vintage images from the archives of the Whitman County Historical Society. The book will be available Nov. 15.
Luedeking, who passed away in 2009, was a professor in chemical engineering at WSU 1956-1981. He was involved in the community, including the historical society. Selecting historical photos and writing captions for them for the local newspaper became a favorite activity in the last decade of his life.
Garretson was a professor in the WSU history department 1970-2008. Though his field of expertise was 18th century Austrian history, he acquired an interest in local history too. He is secretary of the historical society board and archivist for its paper materials.
He completed Luedeking's dream of a historical book about Pullman. "Pullman" is the most recent in the "Images of America" series by Arcadia Publishing.
The book is 128 pages, softcover, and will be available at bookstores, retailers, online and through the publisher.
About the Author
Author Robert Luedeking published many articles on specific topics of Pullman history. Over the last decade, his carefully researched captions, combined with images from the Whitman County Historical Society archives, created many of the highly popular "Pictures of the Past" printed in the Moscow-Pullman Daily News. In 2009, Pullman lost a dedicated historian when Leudeking passed away. In this volume, the Whitman County Historical Society draws upon its extensive collection of historic images and Luedeking's work to depict Pullman's heritage.
