Synopses & Reviews
Describes a set of quantitative and qualitative studies on teaching students with learning disabilities who were mainstreamed in elementary school. The studies examine the thinking and behavior of more and less effective teachers, report results of investigations of students' actions in some of the classrooms observed, and place the findings in the present sociopolitical context of mainstreaming. They avoid methodological detail to stay focused on the real and practical problems of teaching children with special needs in regular classrooms.
Synopsis
This work occupies a unique place amongst the array of books addressing the inclusion of students with disabilities in general education classrooms. In contrast to the more prescriptive books on the market, Images of Mainstreaming emphasizes the extensive use of case studies and the use of reflection on case studies to change teaching practices. Its goal is to help preservice and practicing teachers and administrators examine the challenging issue of inclusion from the perspective of other teachers.
