Synopses & Reviews
Our Indian artifact authority has assembled his most colorful volume yet, Indian Trade Relics. The first of his books to be featured entirely in color, it boasts over 1,150 photographs of actual artifacts hundreds of years old, each with accurate and detailed captions. Emphasizing what was traded long ago, what exists today, and what can still be collected, the book is an introduction to the subject of historic trade goods, from glass beads, cloth, and ornaments, to knives, firearms, traps, and axes. A list of trade artifacts and terms is provided, as well as an extensive chapter on the A.H. Gottschall collection. There are also gunflints, arrowheads, tomahawks, kettles, and miscellaneous trade goods. Highly interesting facts and incidents about early traders and their times are mentioned, and photos and information have been contributed both from top collectors and specialized museums and auctions. Author Lar Hothem is well known for his expertise in Indian artifacts, claiming four volumes in his continuing "Indian Artifacts of the Midwest" series, as well as a volume on Indian pipes. This book makes a great companion to his others, and its vivid colors and striking detail of Indian relics will astound collectors. Don't ever trade this book for another one -- it's bound to become a treasure itself!
