Publisher Comments

"What do you want from me?" he asks. What I want from every person in my life, I want to tell him. More.

Abandoned by her mother on Jellicoe Road when she was eleven, Taylor Markham, now seventeen, is finally being confronted with her past. But as the reluctant leader of her boarding school dorm, there isn't a lot of time for introspection. And while Hannah, the closest adult Taylor has to family, has disappeared, Jonah Griggs is back in town, moody stares and all.

In this absorbing story by Melina Marchetta, nothing is as it seems and every clue leads to more questions as Taylor tries to work out the connection between her mother dumping her, Hannah finding her then and her sudden departure now, a mysterious stranger who once whispered something in her ear, a boy in her dreams, five kids who lived on Jellicoe Road eighteen years ago, and the maddening and magnetic Jonah Griggs, who knows her better than she thinks he does. If Taylor can put together the pieces of her past, she might just be able to change her future.

Review

A beautifully rendered mystery.— Kirkus Reviews (starred review)

Review

“Melina Marchetta has a knack for writing stories that swallow you up and refuse to let you go until youve read every last word....Marchetta is a master at creating intriguing characters and her stories are heartfelt.”— Sydney Morning Herald on JELLICOE ROAD

Synopsis

In this absorbing new novel by the award-winning author of "Saving Francesca," nothing is as it seems and every clue leads to more questions as Taylor Markham tries to put together the pieces of her past.

Synopsis

Winner of the Michael L. Printz Award * ALA Best Book for Young Adults * Kirkus Best Book

Jellicoe Road is a dazzling tale that is part love story, part family drama, and part coming-of-age novel. Described by Kirkus Reviews as "a beautifully rendered mystery" and by VOYA as "a great choice for more sophisticated readers and those teens who like multifaceted stories and characters."

Abandoned by her mother on Jellicoe Road when she was eleven, Taylor Markham, now seventeen, is finally being confronted with her past. But as the reluctant leader of her boarding school dorm, there isn't a lot of time for introspection. And while Hannah, the closest adult Taylor has to family, has disappeared, Jonah Griggs, the boy who might be the key to unlocking the secrets for Taylor's past, is back in town, moody stares and all.

In this absorbing story by Melina Marchetta, nothing is as it seems and every clue leads to more questions as Taylor tries to work out the connection between her mother dumping her; Hannah finding her; Hannah's sudden departure; a mysterious stranger who once whispered something in her ear; a boy in her dreams; five kids who lived on Jellicoe Road eighteen years ago; and the maddening and magnetic Jonah Griggs, who knows her better than she thinks he does.

If Taylor can put together the pieces of her past, she just might be able to change her future.

The book is just as brilliant as Melina Marchettas others such as 'Saving Francesca' and 'Looking for Alabrandi'. It is however a lot more complex in the beginging at least when compared with the other two. On the Jellicoe Road is based on a seventeen girl Taylor Markham who is struggling with finding her identity as well as trying to find her mother who had abandoned her at the age of ten. Taylor is in her last years as a boarder at the Jellicoe School where she is planing to leave and find her mother even though all she has to go on is a re-occurring dream. Meanwhile she has been nominated as the head of her house which also comes with responsibilities and power over those younger than her as well as being elected the head of the ‘Secret Underground gang’ which she is to prepare and lead into the yearly tradition of the ‘territory wars’ against the Townies led by Chaz Santangelo and the Cadets led by Jonah Griggs whom Taylor has a disorderly past with. Taylor struggles a lot throughout the book because of her identity crisis with not knowing where she if from, constantly pushing everyone away so she doesn’t need to become attached or hurt when they leave. The book also tell the story of the 'oroiginal five' which begins as just a novel Hannah (basically taylors guardian) happens to be writing , although it turns out to be something much more.
