Synopsis
The process of transformation which saw the Byzantine Empire and the world of the Early Middle Ages develop from the Late Antique Imperium Romanum led to changes in all areas of life. The central topic of this volume of international contributions is the question of how the historiography of the period confronted these changes.

Zu den interessantesten und aufschlussreichsten Themen der historischen Forschung gehoouml;rt der Transformationsprozess, in dessen Verlauf sich aus dem spaauml;tantiken Imperium Romanum das Byzantinische Reich und die Welt des Fruuuml;hen Mittelalters entwickelten. Dieser Prozess ist von Kontinuitaten ebenso wie von Diskontinuitaten gepragt und fuhrte sowohl in den germanischen Nachfolgereichen im Westen (Franken, Vandalen, Ost- und Westgoten) als auch in Byzanz und seinen Randgebieten (Syrien und Agypten) zu einem tiefgreifenden Wandel aller Lebensbereiche, der in den zeitgenossischen und spateren Quellen ganz unterschiedliche Darstellungen und Bewertungen erfahren hat. Im Mittelpunkt des Sammelbandes steht die Frage, ob und wie sich die Geschichtsschreibung dieser Ubergangszeit mit den Veranderungen auseinandergesetzt hat, und welche Rolle hierbei das soziale und religiose Umfeld, die regionale Verortung und die Einbindung in Gattungstraditionen spielte. Der interdisziplinare, epochenubergreifende Ansatz des Sammelbandes, der Beitrage eines Kolloquiums zu Ehren Alexander Demandts vereint, erweist sich dabei als uberaus fruchtbar und ermoglicht neue Einblicke in den Umgang mit der Geschichte in der Vergangenheit.

Like the Millennium-Jahrbuch, the journal Millennium-Studien pursues an international, interdisciplinary approach that cuts across historical eras. Composed of scholars from various disciplines, the editorial and advisory boards welcome submissions from a range of fields, including history, literary studies, art history, theology, and philosophy. Millennium-Studien also accepts manuscripts on Latin, Greek, and Oriental cultures.
In addition to offering a forum for monographs and edited collections on diverse topics, Millennium-Studien publishes commentaries and editions. The journal primary accepts publications in German and English, but also considers submissions in French, Italian, and Spanish.
