Eric Sawford, who has written numerous steam railway books for Sutton, uses a selection of photographs to tell the sad story of the last days of steam power of the Eastern Region. His pictures show that, while steam locomotives weren't finally withdrawn from the Eastern Region until the mid-1960s, the 1950s were their swan song. In those days, steam dominated and the few diesels that were in service were mostly designed for shunting duties.
