Les encouragements lui avaient manque. Pierre etait le seul qui lui eut conseille d'aller prendre a Paris les notions de son art de predilection. Mais a cette epoque-la, le Corinthien etait retenu a Blois par son amour pour la Savinienne. Il avait donc renonce a son reve, et avait rabattu ses pretentions sur les ornements que comporte la menuiserie en batiments. De l'aveu de tous les compagnons, il excellait a la partie difficile des calottes ornees dans les niches, et personne ne decoupait comme lui les feuilles legeres d'un chapiteau grec. C'est a cause de cette specialite qu'on lui avait donne l'elegant surnom qu'il portait.
