In Literature: A World History werden alle wesentlichen literarischen Traditionen der Welt behandelt, wobei insbesondere auf die Wechselbeziehungen zwischen lokalen und nationalen Kulturen im Zeitverlauf eingegangen wird. Das umfangreiche vierb ndige Werk betrachtet die Weltliteratur vom Beginn der geschichtlichen Aufzeichnung bis heute mit den zahlreichen Eigenheiten der Literaturen in ihrem jeweiligen gesellschaftlichen und geistesgeschichtlichen Kontext. Die vier B nde befassen sich mit der Literatur vor dem Jahr 200 n. Chr., von 200 bis 1500 n. Chr., von 1500 bis 1800 n. Chr. und von 1800 n. Chr. bis zum Jahr 2000. Dabei geben rund vierzig Autorinnen und Autoren neue Einblicke in die Kunst der Literatur und er rtern die Lage der Literatur in der heutigen Welt.
