Synopses & Reviews
Limericks about Nantucket are not a new concept, but we've never seen anything like Manley and Marshall's limerick books for children. The author and illustrator, longtime friends in Hingham, Massachusetts, have created other limerick books for young people, combining Manley's whimsy with Marshall's beautiful cut-paper collages (Lola Tortola 0-333-72688-X; Talkaty Talker 1-56397-195-X). This is their first book about a treasured place in New England, and we hope it won't be their last for Commonwealth Editions. Each of the twelve limericks concerns one or more animal characters enjoying or getting into mischief at a popular Nantucket site. The nanny of the title is a goat, of course. Her name is Miss Peach, and she peddles the twins to the beach. There's also a deer named Georgie who goes out for a jog in the Shawkemo fog, a seal named Kerrie who decides to race the FastFerry, and a cat from Quidnet named Lizzy whose hair was impossibly frizzy. The characters and cut-outs will delight children, while teaching them about the places of Nantucket-and what they can do where. For example: A skillful skateboarder named Pete / Took a tumble on Federal Street, / For the street was so cobbly / And wobbledy-wobbly / His board said goodbye to his feet!
