Synopses & Reviews
Windows 98 will be the upgrade to Microsoft's successful Windows 95 operating system for personal computers. Three years in the making, Windows 98 will offer: better power management, low-level support for digital video disk (DVD) drives and Universal Serial Bus (USB) peripherals, and the Macintosh-like ability to spread the Windows desktop over multiple monitors. Also new will be the ability to display broadcast video -- with embedded data -- received through TV tuner cards, and accelerated application loading and Windows shutdown times.
Another important part of the new OS will be the Active Desktop: Internet Explorer 4.0, the updated Web browser, will take on an added role as the new-and-improved user interface for Windows itself. With single-click navigation of files and folders, enhancements to the Taskbar, Desktop, and Explorer, IE 4.0 gives Windows 98 an infinitely customizable dream GUI.
