Synopsis
What is the digital revolution? It is just another industrial revolution driven by emerging technologies, like those in the past with the steam engine or electric dynamo/motor, but with possibly an even greater impact to society. The authors explore these previous periods of substantial transformational change from the nineteenth century, through three well known project case studies: the Stockton to Darlington Railway, the US Transcontinental Railroad and the Manchester Ship Canal. They then trace the lessons from these transformational projects and establish their relevance to contemporary business and digital transformational projects, particularly when concerned with disruptive technology.
From the outset the authors demonstrate how the management of these early industrial projects led to their transformational impact. The book addresses a wide range of project management topics associated with transformation. These include the project sponsor role, establishing governance and entrepreneurial partnerships, project uncertainty and complexity, incorporating agility, exploiting unexpected opportunities, fostering technology innovation, creating a high morale culture, extensive prototyping and piloting, enabling knowledge capture, project reflexivity, transitioning to operations, and managing risks. With little contemporary literature on how project management is enabling digital transformations this book resets our view of it and addresses existing gaps in the literature.
