But through the college's president, a mother of five children, she learned that women need not live their lives solely through husband and children. She graduated intending to apply her full capacities to meaningful goals outside herself.
Almost by accident, she found goals worthy of her full capacities. When she joined AT&T, it was literally "The Telephone Company," whose mission for nearly a century had been to put a telephone with an arm's reach of every household and to be a company worthy of trust. She was there when AT&T was forced to spin off its local telephone companies to settle an antitrust suit. In the chaos that followed, she drew meaning from helping it regain its balance by redefining its purpose.
