Synopsis
Having begun her studies in sculpture, American artist Mary Heilmann (b. 1940) turned to painting in the 1970s, and has since been recognized for her idiosyncratic approach to abstraction. Not content to follow the dogmatic principles of abstraction's forebears, Heilmann has instead attempted to find in geometrical forms the impulse of narrative. Her art seems the logical extension of Mondrian's preoccupation with vertical and horizontal frameworks.
