Synopsis
Mercedes-Benz succeeded with their roadsters where other prestigious manufacturers either failed or feared to tread. The author explains why, first establishing the background -- the 190 SL and the unbalanced but beautiful 300 SL -- then examining the first of the immediate family, the 230 SL and its offspring, the 250 and 280 SL. Setright, in his own inimitable style, explains how the underpowered S Class of the mid-1970s was in some ways the result of anti-car legislation. By then, he writes, "environmentalists and conservationists were bellowing to each other like mastodons across the primeval swamps". A special color section makes it a handsome and thoroughly entertaining volume at an unbeatable price.
