Mystery of the Secret Tunnel is about a girl named Mary Sue growing up as a sharecropper's daughter on a small farm in the early fifties. She told Louise her best friend about the day of the tornado and how her daddy found shelter in a cave for her and her little brother Johnny. He told them about the tale of the gold coins that old man George Otts had hidden on his plantation near them. With their backpacks and tools to dig with, they began their trek to search for the hidden gold coins. Herman the bull was their first encounter, and he chased Louise through the pasture. After they climbed over the gate to safety, they collapsed laughing. Mary Sue found a map about the gold coins, and the girls thought they had found where to dig, but the map, written in riddles, told there was another map. They overheard David and Martin plotting to make them tell all they knew about the gold coins, so they sneaked off one moonlit night to the plantation. They never thought how spooky it would be to go past the family cemetery dating back before the Civil War.
