Synopses & Reviews
Synopsis
Considered to be one of the most original British writers of the 1980s, Peter Ackroyd is also well known as poet, biographer, and reviewer. In the first full-length study of his novels to date, recurrent structural and thematic traits in Ackroyd's novels are analysed in depth, showing how they grow out of the tension created by two apparently contradictory tendencies: the metafictional tendency to blur the boundaries between story-telling and history, and the mythical elements in his writings. While the style and concerns of Ackroyd's writing are deeply enmeshed in the literary past, they can only be adequately addressed with the most aware of today's critical approaches.
Synopsis
A critical study of the films of Stanley Kubrick, one of the great directors of the century.
Garc a Mainar's critical study of the films of the late Stanley Kubrick includes analysis of all but his last work, Eyes Wide Shut, and offers both a formal analysis of the films based on style and narrative pattern, and atheoretical, postmodernist approach to ideas presented in the films. Garc a Mainar is particularly concerned with analyzing the relevance of spectacle in Kubrick's films, seeing it as a disruptive mechanism that can call into question the value and necessity of communication. He identifies different kinds of spectacle in the films, and proceeds to a detailed examination of these different forms in 2001 A Space Odyssey, Barry Lyndon, and Full Metal Jacket.
Luis M. Garc a Mainar teaches English at the University of Zaragoza, Spain.
