Powell's Staff: Books to Fill the TV-Shaped Hole in Your Heart (1 comment)
This last week, we had to say goodbye to TV shows about a complicated, rich family; a murdery, wannabe actor; an enthusiastically kind football coach and his team; and a would-be stand-up comedian in 1950s New York. We already miss them...

Synopses & Reviews

Publisher Comments

One of the most important and influential novels of our time.

Neuromancer is the multiple award-winning novel that launched the astonishing career of William Gibson. The first fully-realized glimpse of humankind's digital future, it is a shocking vision that has challenged our assumptions about our technology and ourselves, reinvented the way we speak and think, and forever altered the landscape of our imaginations.

Now, for the first time, Ace Books is proud to present this groundbreaking literary achievement in a new trade paperback edition.

Review

"Gibson has revitalized science fiction as no other single force in a generation." Rolling Stone

Review

"A mind-bender of a read." The Village Voice

Review

"The 21st-century world of Neuromancer is freshly imagined, compellingly detailed and chilling in its implications....Mr. Gibson's style is all flash, and his characters are all pose without substance....The story moves faster than the speed of thought, but even when I wasn't sure what was happening, I felt confident that Mr. Gibson would pull me through, and he did." Gerald Jonas, The New York Times

Review

"Kaleidoscopic, picaresque, flashy and decadent...an amazing virtuoso performance." The Washington Post

Review

"It made me want to live in its world." The San Francisco Chronicle

Review

"A revolutionary novel." Publishers Weekly

Review

"Gibson is tapped straight into our collective cultural mainline and shows no sign of stopping." Spin

Review

"Terrific stuff. Gibson's horrifying vision of our terrible headlong rush to nowhere is a must for science fiction and adult fiction collections." Library Journal

Synopsis

Hotwired to the leading edges of art and technology, Neuromancer is a cyberpunk, science fiction masterpiece--a classic that ranks with 1984 and Brave New World as one of the twentieth century's most potent visions of the future.

The Matrix is a world within the world, a global consensus-hallucination, the representation of every byte of data in cyberspace...

Henry Dorsett Case was the sharpest data-thief in the business--until a vengeful ex-employer crippled his nervous system. Now a mysterious new employer has recruited him for a last-chance run. The target: an unthinkably powerful artificial intelligence orbiting Earth. With a dead man riding shotgun and Molly, mirror-eyed street-samurai, to watch his back, Case embarks on an adventure that ups the ante on an entire genre of fiction.

The winner of the Hugo, Nebula, and Philip K. Dick Awards, Neuromancer was the first fully-realized glimpse of humankind's digital future--a shocking vision that has challenged our assumptions about our technology and ourselves, reinvented the way we speak and think, and forever altered the landscape of our imaginations.

Now a mysterious new employer has recruited him for a last-chance run at an unthinkably powerful artificial intelligence. With a dead man riding shotgun and Molly, a mirror-eyed street-samurai, to watch his back, Case is ready for the adventure that upped the ante on an entire genre of fiction.

William Gaboda , February 13, 2010 (view all comments by William Gaboda)
William Gibson is one of the originators of the so-called cyper-punk genre of science fiction. Gibson offers plenty of technological wow in his writing, but does so without compromising the writing and story-telling. The story is fascinating and complex, taking place in a 21st century that might easily have become a reality. His characters are sharp if (at least in this early example of his writing) perhaps a little underdeveloped. Neuromancer is a quest, although we're never sure for what until the end of the book. Even then there's enough doubt that one is drawn right into the two sequel novels (Count Zero and Mona Lisa Overdrive) that follow. Gibson's writing is clean and simple, never wordy or cloying. If you are unfamiliar with William Gibson, Neuromancer (or his short story collection Burning Chrome) is a great place to begin your acquaintance.
