Susan Tuttle really knows how to create an engaging story full of heart-wrenching loss and grief but also brimming with hope, second chances, and courage to step out of fear. This story of Rachael and Evan is a best friends-to-more story with quite a bit of history on both sides that they need to wade through to get to their happily-ever-after. Rachael is a widow, still grieving the loss of her husband and daughter while trying to grapple with her only son going to college. She is strong, capable, artistic, and heartbreakingly lost in this different season of life. Evan is the protector and superhero, who is sidelined currently from an injury and ends up working a cold case that becomes bigger than he expected. The reality of so many missing children is incredibly heart-breaking. The incorporation of mural painting was quite interesting and the genre of hyperrealism in painting was fascinating to learn about.
There were a few spots in the story that felt a bit slow and I could not shake the feeling that I missed something throughout the book - perhaps it is because I only read book 2 in the series and did not read from very beginning of the series. Still, the affection and attraction between Rachael and Evan are palpable, as is their grief, loss, and fear.
If you enjoy contemporary romance, you will surely enjoy this book. I received the book via JustRead Tours and was under no obligation to post a positive comment. All opinions are solely my own.
