Synopsis
Black, one of Britains most prolific historians presents a short history of England from a new point of view. He asks such questions as, what does being English mean and how did it influence its history? He identifies two central themes in this country's history: the lack of geographical and economic uniformity within England; and the fact that from the Roman invasion onwards a united England was often politically associated with part of Europe. The book offers a lively analysis of both major events and personalities and of underlying themes.
