Powell's Staff: New Literature in Translation: December 2022 and January 2023 (0 comment)
It may be a new year, this may be a list of new books, but our love for literature in translation hasn’t changed at all, and we are so pleased to be enthusiastically recommending these recent releases. On this list, you’ll find a Spanish novel where controversy swirls around a Coca-Cola billboard...

Best Horror, Sci-Fi, and Fantasy of 2017

Staff Pick

The cover of Kim Stanley Robinson's newest science fiction novel offers a great deal of insight about the story he tells. Sea level has risen 50 feet and New York City is submerged. The book, set in the not-so-distant future, shares a very realistic view of how humans will cope with, and adapt to, the impact of climate change and many other societal issues that are on our minds today.

Publisher Comments

A new vision of the future from Kim Stanley Robinson, the New York Times bestselling author of science fiction masterworks such as the Mars trilogy, 2312, and Aurora.

The waters rose, submerging New York City.

But the residents adapted and it remained the bustling, vibrant metropolis it had always been. Though changed forever.
Every street became a canal. Every skyscraper an island.

Through the eyes of the varied inhabitants of one building Kim Stanley Robinson shows us how one of our great cities will change with the rising tides.

And how we too will change.

Review

"In this both heartening and dismaying vision of a peri-apocalyptic world, human greed (of course) is the villain, to which the only counteragent is the tenacity and resolve of the human spirit." Financial Times

Review

"The tale is one of adventure, intrigue, relationships, and market forces....The individual threads weave together into a complex story well worth the read." Booklist

Review

"An exploration of human resilience in the face of extreme pressure...starkly beautiful and fundamentally optimistic visions of technological and social change in the face of some of the worst devastation we might bring upon ourselves." The Conversation

Review

"Science fiction is threaded everywhere through culture nowadays, and it would take an act of critical myopia to miss the fact that Robinson is one of the world's finest working novelists, in any genre. New York 2140 is a towering novel about a genuinely grave threat to civilization." Guardian

I really enjoyed the format of New York 2140. This is a book that needs your full attention, or you will miss an important detail. Although lengthy, 613 pages...I recommend this book to all serious readers. The assorted characters are listed as (a,b,c,d etc) with their stories of what is happening to them, after a global-warming apocalypse-- which changes the landscape of New York City! Every skyscraper becomes an island! The book jacket is amazing and causes me to want to see a movie made from this book! There are snippets of quotes from other authors, throughout the book; word definitions and how they are changed due to this catastrophe. So interesting...a must read for all sci-fi lovers and readers of "it could happen" genre.
