- Reviews relevant physiological and biochemical processes at the beginning of most chapters to provide a framework for discussing the mechanisms and actions of drugs that affect those processes.
- Discussesnot only what drugs do, but also how they do itthe mechanisms of action at the cellular and molecular levels.
- Places boxed key points throughout the text, offering readers at-a-glance access to essential knowledge.
- Provides overviews of the therapeutic uses of different drug classes in clinical uses boxes throughout the text.
- Offers brief coverage, where appropriate, of how certain pharmacological compounds are used to explore cellular and physiological functions outside the clinical setting.

Features a full-color page design and art program, with completely redrawn diagrams and many new figures.
- Begins each chapter with an Overview section that details the scope and order of topics to be covered.
- Covers not only new agents, but also the advances in molecular biology that are driving further drug development, new treatments in the pipeline, and relevant regulatory controls.
- Gives readers theoption to explore selected topics in greater depth through small print sections that contain complex and sometimes speculative material that is complementary, but not essential to the main discussion thread in each chapter.
- Includes four new chapters: an introductory chapter entitled What is Pharmacology? two chapters on cellular processes that are affected by many of the drugs described later in the book, Excitation, Contraction, and Secretion and Cell Proliferation and Apoptosis and a final chapter on Drug Discovery and Development.
- Devotes more coverage to the drugs used to fight infectious agents, creating separate chapters for antibacterial, antiviral, antifungal, antiprotozoal, and antihelminthic drugs as well as cancer chemotherapy in the newly retitled Drugs Used in the Treatment of Infections and Cancer section.

Synopsis
Pharmacology is now established as a worldwide best-selling and highly acclaimed textbook for medical and science students In this fifth edition, as in the previous four, the approach has been not just to describe what drugs do but to emphasise the
mechanisms by which they act - where possible at the cellular and molecular level. Therapeutic agents have a high rate of obsolescence and new ones appear each year. An appreciation of the mechanisms of action of the class of drugs to which a new agent belongs provides a good starting point for understanding and using the new compound intelligently.

Pharmacology is a lively scientific discipline in its own right, with an importance beyond that of providing a basis for the use of drugs in therapy. The book therefore, where appropriate, includes brief coverage of the use of drugs as probes for elucidating cellular and physiological functions, even when the compounds have no clinical uses.
The fifth edition retains the short summaries of relevant physiological and biochemical processes placed at the beginning of most chapters to form a basis for the subsequent discussion of pharmacological actions. As before, short sets of key points are placed in boxes throughout the text. These are not intended as comprehensive summaries but rather to highlight pharmacological information that the authors consider important. Factual knowledge in pharmacology is so extensive and expanding so rapidly that students can easily find the information load daunting, and these key points are intended to make it easier for students to gets to grips with the essentials of the subject. As in the previous edition, the therapeutic use of drugs has been given prominence by setting it out in easily identified 'clinical boxes'.
For the Fifth Edition the book is presented in full colour with a new page format and design. Most diagrams have been updated and all have been redrawn in colour, while many new figures have been added. Continuing the approach used in earlier editions the illustrations, wherever feasible, use real data rather than notional information. As previously, the emphasis is placed on the chemical structures of drugs for where this information helps in understanding how the drugs act.
All chapters have been updated and an 'Overview' section has been introduced at the beginning of each to help the reader get a flying start on that topic. In including new material, the book takes into account not only new agents but also recent extensions of basic knowledge which presage further drug development, and, where possible, gives a brief outline of new treatments in the pipeline. New 'small print' sections have been included in many chapters. These contain more detailed, sometimes speculative, material, which can be skipped by the reader in a hurry without losing the main thread, but will be of interest to readers wishing to go into greater depth.
As before, the book includes fairly extensive sections on 'References and further reading' at the end of each chapter. Because the medical curriculum stresses project work and the preparation of special study modules, references have been annotated to emphasize the main aspects of their coverage and so make the Reference section easier for students to use.
This book concentrates on explaining the mechanisms by which drugs act and relates these to their overall pharmacological effects and clinical uses.An especially well written textbook - it is regularly cited by students as the best textbook they have used for this reason.
An exceptional book for a major subject in every medical curriculum and for a large range of other science/health related courses. The clinical emphasis is appropriate for the changes in medical teaching providing the student with the necessary overview on how a class of drugs will be used in a clinical situation. This information is being summarised for emphasis. Note: this is notpractical therapeutic information, ie, it does not say give 5mg/24 hour. It will instead stress that, for example, thiazides are used for hypertension, mild heart failure, etc.
Puts pharmacology in the perspective of the other science subjects, especially physiology and biochemistry. Many students have said that they use this book to learn and understand their physiology, especially because it is so well written and explained. Many chapters have brief summaries of relevant physiological and biochemical processes at the beginning to form a basis for the subsequent treatment of pharmacological actions.
Key points boxes included in each chapter highlighting all the main facts and ideas.Clinical application summary boxes throughout which reflect the books increased emphasis on aspects of clinical pharmacology and the clinical use of drugs.
Appendix lists the most important agents divided into those of primary and secondary interest.Annotated further reading lists are included with emphasis on recent reviews and papers covering significant new advances.
