Synopsis
Pintzuk has corrected her 1991 dissertation, but not updated it to conform to subsequent changes in the understanding of English or Old English, because the primary result she reports is valid within any syntactic framework. That result is that Old English exhibits synchronic grammatical competition, which can be interpreted as variation in phrase structure, in the headedness of maximal projections, or in the setting of a directionality parameter.
