Synopses & Reviews
The century between the restoration of the Bourbon monarchy in 1875 and the death of Franco in 1975 saw profound social, religious and political changes for the Spanish Catholic church. A turbulent period in Spanish history, the Church endured--and matured--first through the civil war, and then through the Franco dictatorship. Looking at both social and political history as it was recorded in Catholic and ecclesiastical archives, this work examines popular cults, religious communities, the clergy, Catholic social organizations and ecclesiastical politics to present a fully rounded picture of the Catholic life and politics of the time.
Review
"A fine book, intelligently written and forcefully argued....Must be regarded as the standard treatment in English on the topic."--History: Reviews of New Books
"A superb study...The author has brought together a wealth of information not found in any other single volume, and she has added her own judicious and clear interpretation of one of the most troubled national churches in modern history....Lannon says in the preface that her 'interest [is] in the internal structure and tensions of Catholic values and attitudes.' She has succeeded marvelously in demonstrating this interest in a work that will be a standard in the field for years to come."--The Catholic Historical Review
Synopsis
Arguing that the 1964 edition of Eugene O'Neill's unfinished play More Stately Mansions, prepared after the playwright's death, was missing a substantial amount of material that O'Neill intended for inclusion, Martha Bower here presents an entirely new edition of the play with this
material--dialogue, character description, an entire scene, the epilogue, and large parts of other scenes--restored. Published to coincide with the centennial of O'Neill's birth, it will stand as an important contribution to O'Neill scholarship.
