Five Book Friday: In Memoriam
(0 comment)
Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. I highly recommend digging into the recommendations — we would never lead you astray — but today...

Janet Frame was required reading in New Zealand high schools when I was there and virtually unknown in the U.S. Such is the case of different hemispheres. Her writing emulates Shakespeare and gives it a twist. Her writing remains pertinent and carefully crafted by today's standards, though she was one of the first novelists to include references to herself in her writing. This book of beautiful short stories presents perspectives on common, ordinary themes; illuminations on unspoken "elephants in the room"; and reflections in metaphorical messages. I found them delightful and enjoyed taking them in doses of one or two a day, a pleasant re-treat for a few minutes' time.
