Auf Thomas Hobbes geht die Feststellung zurück, Absurdität sei ein Privileg des Menschen: Nur ein rationales Wesen ist offensichtlich der Irrationalität fähig. Während das, was außerhalb des Bereichs der Rationalität liegt, „arational" zu nennen wäre, setzt Irrationalität einen Verstoß innerhalb des Geltungsbereichs der Vernunft voraus. Wie lassen sich aber irrationale Gedanken, Gefühle und Handlungen erklären, wenn Handlungserklärungen, die auf Gedanken und Gefühle Bezug nehmen, grundsätzlich rationalisierende Erklärungen sind, d.h. es erlauben sollen, aus der Perspektive des Handelnden Ereignisse und Einstellungen für vernünftig zu halten? Die AutorInnen greifen Fragestellungen wie diese auf und nehmen eine kritische Bestandsaufnahme vor.
