Synopsis
Excerpt from Register or Memorial of Ewell, Surrey: With Notes of Merton as Lords of the Manor, the Early Manorial Conditions, and the Topography of the District
The normal conditions Of villain tenure had evidently been a good deal modified by the time of this Custumal. All we can say is that the original holding had been a juger of 13 acres with a rent of 15d. And an Obligation of two works a week for forty-eight weeks throughout the year, in all ninety-six works, many Of which might be worked out in various occasional services.
By 1411, and probably long before that time, these regular services had altogether ceased, and had made way for the few occasional services mentioned in the list Of that date.
