Running the Rift is outstanding on several levels - coming of age, historical fiction and family sage. The story is difficult to read in parts, but it also creates an unforgettable picture of the beauty of Rwanda and the strong loving extended families. It is the story of a teen whose world turns to chaos when the Hutu people of Rwanda begin systemic genocide of the Tutsi. Jean Patrick knows there is conflict, and he has had some scary encounters with gangs of Hutu hoodlums, but he has been semi-sheltered from the atrocities. His parents and elders taught him to believe in the new president who promised to restore peace and tolerance. Then the situation erupts into harrowing heinous lawlessness. Jean Patrick dreamed of helping his country by being the first Rwandan to qualify for the Olympics. All of his hard work and training end up saving his life. Most of his extended family and friends don't survive. (Anyone who knows even a little about the history of the genocide knows this is not a spoiler.) A memorable story.

I loved this book. It really gave me a deeper understanding and curiosity about the Rwandan genocide. I felt attached to the characters and couldn't put the book down. I also wrote the author, the first time I have ever written an author, and she responded. I highly recommend this book.

An unflinching portrait of the Rwandan genocide, Benaron brings her readers face to face with a young Tutsi athlete who is meant to become a poster child for Hutu tolerance and generosity, but soon begins to question his keepers' motives. Handsomely written, what Benaron does best with this novel is show, through the book's narrative, the subtle siesmic shifts that lead to the eruption of violence that drew the attention of the rest of the world. Running the rift is engaging, thoughtful, and deeply felt, and anyone who reads it will never forget it's powerful cautionary message.
