Das Buch stellt die Grundlagen der Schematherapie vor und schlägt anschließend eine Brücke zur sozialpädagogischen Praxis, um eine sogenannte "Schemapädagogik" zu begründen. Diese Weiterentwicklung ist einzigartig, da die Schematherapie bisher primär in "klassischen" ambulanten und stationären therapeutischen Settings eingesetzt wurde. So wird thematisiert, wie man in (sozial-)pädagogischen Berufen konstruktiv mit auffälligen Kindern und Jugendlichen umgeht, sie mit schematherapeutischen Methoden fördert und zu Verhaltensänderungen motiviert.
