Synopses & Reviews
Len Lasher, a rich businessmen, discovers he has ALS (Lou Gherig's disease) just as he is working on a big deal--it'd be worth much less if it were discovered he were about to die. He pretends he has MS, instead. Meanwhile, there is a plan afoot to kidnap his daughter, Deanie. The ransom the kidnappers demand is a famous piece of jewelry once belonging to the Duchess of Windsor and now in the possession of Lasher's beautiful, loving wife, whom since childhood has been told she bears a startling resemblance to the Duchess. When Lasher's daughter disappears, Scotti, a transgendered detective, joins forces with his ex-wife, an insurance agent in the Hamptons investigating a horse owner who has his valuable racehorses killed in order to collect the insurance when they can't compete anymore. This brings Scotti into contact with Lasher's faithful servant, an Amish named Delroy, who has been banished by his community and accidentally discovers that Scotti, feminine as she is, has not yet been able to afford the surgery that will make her a bonafide male. Meanwhile, Lasher has a life-and-death secret he refuses to impart, and his best friend, a famous male novelist, has turned up at the Lasher estate, where life is privileged, strange, and suddenly in crisis.
