Synopsis
Two hundred years ago, President Thomas Jefferson commissioned Meriwether Lewis and William Clark to open the West after the Louisiana Purchase. Historical journals detailing the trip provide the content for this text. This colorfully illustrated book provides standards-based learning activities for ages 9 and up. Seaman's Journey with Lewis and Clark traces the Newfoundland Seaman in this event. Designed by teachers, the book includes thoughtful, creative opportunities to learn about the Corps of Discovery. The bicentennial commemoration of one of America's best-known explorations provides the context for language and mathematics activities using the national standards, including cultural content standards for the Bureau of Indian Affairs. The book features double-page spreads for each of the states along the journey, along with relevant social studies content, including state capitals and state mottoes. Activities include mazes, games, and word searches. This book is designed to supplement social studies units with sections that provide facts and information while providing ways for students to be actively engaged in each activity. A glossary is provided. Written and developed by four educators, the book has been peer-reviewed for content and cultural accuracy. The book is recommended for home school use and summer bridge work.
