Synopses & Reviews
Lieutenant Richard Sharpe finds himself fighting the ruthless armies of Napoleon Bonaparte as they try to bring the whole of the Iberian Peninsula under their control. Napoleon is advancing fast through northern Portugal, and no one knows whether the small contingent of British troops stationed in Lisbon will stay to fight or sail back to England. Sharpe, however, does not have a choice: He and his squad of riflemen are on the lookout for the missing daughter of an English wine shipper when the French onslaught begins and the city of Oporto becomes a setting for carnage and disaster.
Stranded behind enemy lines, Sharpe returns to his mission to find Kate Savage. Sharpe's position on enemy grounds is precarious, and his search is further complicated by a mysterious and threatening Englishman, Colonel Christopher, who has his own ideas on how the French can be driven from Portugal.
Review
"In 18 previous novels Richard Sharpe, the gutter-bred London orphan who found a home in the British army, has marched over the battlefields of India, Portugal, Spain, and France delivering high adventure to millions of readers worldwide. In the 19th of the series, Lt. Sharpe of the 95th Rifles is trapped behind enemy lines after the French have seized Oporto, Portugal. In every Sharpe novel there is an enemy of great resourcefulness to overcome and a beautiful woman to save. Here a shadowy British officer whose goal is peace at any price embroils Sharpe and his men in a diplomatic dodge and more than one desperate fight. As in the other Sharpe novels, the story is framed by actual historical events (here the French retreat to Spain in 1809) and the period detail is wonderfully depicted.
Those who have a taste for historical fiction must give Sharpe a try." Reviewed by Patrick LaRochelle, Virginia Quarterly Review (Copyright 2006 Virginia Quarterly Review)
