Powell's Staff: Best Books of 2023: Fiction (0 comment)
2023 was such a great year for fiction! We had the hardest time narrowing down our list of the best fiction books of the year, but after much debate, we settled on these 23 (an appropriate number for 2023, we decided). The books on this list take place in Hawaii, Argentina, the Hamptons, a Palace in the desert, and a land of milk and honey...

Publisher Comments

Legendary artist Frank Miller opened a noir opus in Sin City. This critically-acclaimed triumph — honored by both an Eisner Award and the prestigious National Cartoonists' Award — combines the pulp intensity of writers like Spillane and Cain with the gritty graphic storytelling that only Miller can deliver.

Sin City is the place — tough as leather and dry as tinder. Love is the fuel, and the now-infamous character Marv has the match...not to mention a condition. He's gunning after Goldie's killer, so it's time to watch this town burn!

Frank Miller is one of modern comics' first talents to publish a comic book that he created, crafted, and owned. That book is Sin City, which grew from the wellspring of Miller's passionate desire to create a comic book with two distinct qualities — it wouldn't be a superhero comic, and it had to be a crime comic. Enter Marv and Goldie. And a psychotic killer. And a crime-drenched town. And a corrupted diocese. Sin City is a town like no other, but most places resemble it in one way or another. In real life, thugs live everywhere and women sell their bodies all the time, but if everyday life is a storm, Sin City exists in the eye of a hurricane.

Synopsis

The first volume of the crime-comic megahit that introduced the now-infamous Marv and spawned a blockbuster film returns in a newly redesigned edition, with a brand-new cover by Frank Miller-some of his first comics art in years
It's a lousy room in a lousy part of a lousy town. But Marv doesn't care. There's an angel in the room. She says her name is Goldie. A few hours later, Goldie's dead without a mark on her perfect body, and the cops are coming before anyone but Marv could know she's been killed. Somebody paid good money for this frame . . .
With a new look generating more excitement than ever before, this third edition is the perfect way to attract a whole new generation of readers to Frank Miller's masterpiece
* Over a million Sin City books in print
* New cover by Frank Miller
* With Miller and codirector Robert Rodriguez gearing up for Sin City 2, this third edition is being released at just the right time
* The Hard Goodbye was the lead story in the Sin City film, starring Mickey Rourke as Marv

Synopsis

Sin City will be a major motion picture in 2005, directed by Miller and Robert Rodriguez (Desperado, Once Upon a Time in Mexico, SpyKids) and featuring a cast of Hollywood all-stars that includes Bruce Willis, Clive Owen, and Benicio del Toro. Frank Miller's Sin City will be based on three Sin City titles: Sin City: The Hard Goodbye; Sin City: The Big Fat Kill; and Sin City: That Yellow Bastard.

All of the Sin City titles will be redesigned by award-winning book designer, Chip Kidd.

Synopsis

A guy like Marv, big and ugly, he doesn't get a whole bunch of chances with dames like Goldie. So when he wakes up three hours later, and someone's killed his goddess, he figures he'll find that someone and return the favor. But it won't be quick and quiet, the way it was with Goldie. It'll be loud and nasty. Illustrated in B&W. Graphic novel format.

Synopsis

There's a big ugly guy and a dame that smells like angels ought to smell, in a lousy room in a lousy part of a lousy town. But that room becomes heaven and that dame's the perfect woman. The goddess. Goldie. So when Marv wakes up and someone's killed his goddess, he figures he'll find that someone and return the favor. But it won't be quick and quiet, the way it was with Goldie. It'll be loud and nasty.

a lot of the art really isn't my style, but the moments that stand out are pretty spectacular. the writing, on the other hand, is more or less spot on from start to finish. hard-boiled/pulp/noir at just about its finest. miller has a great ear for dialogue & writes a mean interior monologue.

This is a stylish, brutal comic that draws on film noir for its look and some of its plot. Not for the faint of heart, but if you liked the movie, you'll probably enjoy this since the film is very faithful to the book. At times I wasn't that into Miller's artwork -- I don't really like how he draws women (they tend to look really boxy!) -- but it's very well-suited to the story.
