A novel of rare, undulating emotion, feeling and humanity. A story so universal that the gay element is almost irrelevant, since it touches on human life in such a deft and incisive way. Isherwood's primary genius is in the way he composes a literary aria of the human condition without sacrificing truth. It is with great joy we read this truth in A Single Man and are humbled by it's crystalline substance. And yet there is a profound delicacy and tenderness in the tone and feel of this underrated literary masterpiece, whilst it at the same time it manages to achieve fusion with the visceral depths of human angst. A book of rare, moving narrative written with extreme skill and conveyed with the master touch of a truly great writer. I cannot wait to see the movie!

After hearing a review of the movie on NPR, we checked out this book. About 110 pages, the chronicle of a single day in a man's life is absolutely beautiful. Clever, telling, humorous, sad, but ultimately joyous, Christopher Isherwood's prose is unique and fresh. The writing flows quickly, yet the message of George's (protagonist) philosophy is deep and meditative without seeming too dense. By far my favorite read of 2009.

This book takes place in a single day of a single man's life, and is best read in one day as well (I would have read it in one sitting if I didn't have a meeting to attend). Though the book is written in third-person narration, it is all filtered through the experiences of George (the single man), whose identity as a British, gay man in a relatively small community is only complicated by the loss of his partner. However, Isherwood is too sophisticated to really make this a novel about sexuality or nationality. Rather, he uses these elements of George's personality as platforms to expose his singularity, one that is affecting and tragic, comical and beautiful, all at once.
