Kelsey Ford: 10 Books That Celebrate Women’s Rights and Women’s Wrongs (0 comment)
Sure, women’s rights have come a long way over the last century, but for every step forward, it feels like we take a few back, and when that feeling is so consistent, so insidious? Man, it makes me want to support women’s wrongs. On this list, you’ll find books about women’s rights — Gloria Steinem, Barbara Ehrenreich, Mary Beard...

Staff Pick

I cannot get enough of Nghi Vo's mesmerizing world-building and characterization. Her very sentences dazzle. In Siren Queen, Vo steeps pre-Code Hollywood in dangerous and deadly magic while her protagonist strives, trades, and outsmarts her way along the perilous and unforgiving road to stardom. Chilling, seductive, and wonderful. Recommended By Sarah R., Powells.com

Publisher Comments

From award-winning author Nghi Vo comes a dazzling new novel where immortality is just a casting call away

It was magic. In every world, it was a kind of magic.

No maids, no funny talking, no fainting flowers. Luli Wei is beautiful, talented, and desperate to be a star. Coming of age in pre-Code Hollywood, she knows how dangerous the movie business is and how limited the roles are for a Chinese American girl from Hungarian Hill — but she doesn't care. She'd rather play a monster than a maid.

But in Luli's world, the worst monsters in Hollywood are not the ones on screen. The studios want to own everything from her face to her name to the women she loves, and they run on a system of bargains made in blood and ancient magic, powered by the endless sacrifice of unlucky starlets like her. For those who do survive to earn their fame, success comes with a steep price. Luli is willing to do whatever it takes — even if that means becoming the monster herself.

Siren Queen offers up an enthralling exploration of an outsider achieving stardom on her own terms, in a fantastical Hollywood where the monsters are real and the magic of the silver screen illuminates every page.

Review

"Searing and seductive, Siren Queen is the kind of book that leaves you wrecked on its shores. When I look up at the stars, I'll think of Luli." Alix E. Harrow, New York Times-bestselling author of The Once and Future Witches

Review

"Nghi Vo has become one of my favorite writers, and Siren Queen is lush and brilliant, a mesmerizing journey into a pre-code Hollywood that is all sharp edges, with the darkest magic and highest stakes." Martha Wells, author of Network Effect

Review

"The book of my dreams — vivid, sensual, frightening, and inexpressibly gorgeous, often in the same sentence....Nghi Vo is a magician — no — maybe a god." Kelly Robson, author of Gods, Monsters & the Lucky Peach

The way the cover feels is the way the story feels—alluring and dangerous. I loved Nghi Vo’s other books, her novellas and “The Chosen and the Beautiful,” so I was really looking forward to this, and it didn’t disappoint. It’s exciting, it's queer, it's magical and monstrous and has a setting to die for. It has a main character who’s ambitious and who I wanted with every fiber of my being as a reader to succeed. This book is stunning. I'll read anything Nghi Vo writes in the future.

I don’t think I’ve ever enjoyed a story that left me thinking “what is happening” at almost every stage. I could have used more world building, but part of that is that I loved this world. Magic sneaks in to this historical fiction about early days of Hollywood, but it felt seamless and just worked. The main character was hard to like, but I think that is part of what made her such a great main character. She was fierce and cold and dedicated to her dreams to be a movie star despite the fact she was Chinese and not the typical blonde beauty of the screen. Despite this being her dream there was a lot of danger to being in the movies and the cameras in this world seemed capable of taking a lot more than one would be willing to give up. I did love the diverse representation not just culturally but with queer characters. This is the first book by this author I have read, but I will definitely be looking into reading their previous work!

Siren Queen is a dark and haunting fantastical reimagining of the golden age of Hollywood. In this alternate Hollywood, the film studios are run by monsters; they are places of blood contracts, cameras that eat souls, and things that aren't quite human. Immortality is possible, but a price must be paid. The skillful intertwining of the magical elements with the real world, accentuate the horror and sense of danger pervasive throughout the book. Luli Wei, born to Chinese immigrants, becomes obsessed with the silver screen from a young age. She is willing to sacrifice to become a star, but on her own terms. She refuses roles that reinforce racist stereotypes, defends her friends, and explores her queerness, all at risk to herself. Vo's writing is lyrical and beautiful, her characters complex. She explores themes such as exploitation, power, racism, xenophobia, homophobia and misogyny. The author creates an exquisite irony in writing about a Hollywood controlled by monsters (because isn’t it in reality?). Siren Queen was compulsively readable and utterly spellbinding. I was enraptured by this book. #BookishFirst

Mysterious and Gripping, I could not put it down. What do you get when you put Hollywood, magic, and a Chinese American girl from Hungaria, together? You get Siren queen. This disciptive story is told to us in past tense by our main character Luli Wei. Luli is full of pure undenying will to do anything in order to suceed. She tells us the story of what sparked her interest in becoming an actress, how it held her there, and how she went by pursuing it along the way. As we read the story we learn what made Luli turn into steal, and how she used that to get exactly what her heart desired. Along Luli's journey we meet unforgettable, loving, cruel and monstrous characters who hook us to keep reading until the last sentence on the very last page. Luli's charcter shows strength, wits, and intellect. Luli's strength came to her when she was her most feminine self, she held power that way. She was smart and seductive. Two qualities that can make any creature with two eyes go feral. The cover is gorgeous and mysterious and goes well with the storyline. The writing style is addictive and kept me glued to the pages. The neverending plot twists kept me surprised and intrested. I liked it very much!
