Staff Top Fives 2015

Our favorite books of the year.

Staff Pick

"No mourners. No funerals. Among them, it passed for 'good luck.'" With a paced, plotted heist and a dark, imaginative fantasy world, Six of Crows is a thrill to read, but what sets it apart for me are the six titular thieves. A criminal mastermind, a shadowy acrobat, a sharpshooting gambler, a secretive runaway, an exiled witch, and the prisoner who once hunted her — these characters are so well fleshed out, their conflicts and collaborations so absorbing, that I would happily read about them doing something as boring as making sandwiches for 465 pages. Recommended By Madeline S., Powells.com

A picture of this book should be in the dictionary under "page turner." This book also surprised me with how much it read like an adult fantasy novel; the world was developed and the heist plot carried the book well. I have to say, though, that my favorite part of the book were the characters; you won't forget this cast! I loved that some of them were people of color and that there was a developing queer romance as well. I can't wait to see how it all unfolds in the sequel!  Recommended By Junix S., Powells.com

If you haven't read Six of Crows, then get on it! It's so, so, so, so good. And funny! And scary! And unpredictable to the extreme. The characters are so complicated and real and amazing... I loved every minute of reading this beautiful book! This will be a treasure in my library. Recommended By McKenzie W., Powells.com

Six wildly explosive characters, each with a special talent, are hired to rescue a scientist from an impenetrable prison. Powerful writing and moments of brutality and surprising tenderness make Six of Crows a compelling read. Recommended By Richard C., Powells.com

A #1 New York Times bestseller

Ketterdam: a bustling hub of international trade where anything can be had for the right price--and no one knows that better than criminal prodigy Kaz Brekker. Kaz is offered a chance at a deadly heist that could make him rich beyond his wildest dreams. But he can't pull it off alone...

A convict with a thirst for revenge.

A sharpshooter who can't walk away from a wager.

A runaway with a privileged past.

A spy known as the Wraith.

A Heartrender using her magic to survive the slums.

A thief with a gift for unlikely escapes.

Six dangerous outcasts. One impossible heist. Kaz's crew is the only thing that might stand between the world and destruction―if they don't kill each other first.

Review

“Set in a world that will be familiar to fans of the author, this book can be fully enjoyed without having read any previous title....This is an easy choice for teens who enjoyed The Grisha Trilogy, Diviners, or any of the Shadowhunter books.” VOYA (Starred Review)

Review

“[A]n exciting beginning to a new sequence from a fantasy author swiftly becoming a talent to watch.” The Horn Book

Review

“Cracking page-turner with a multi-ethnic band of misfits with differing sexual orientations who satisfyingly, believably jell into a family.” Kirkus Reviews (Starred Review)

Six of Crows by Leigh Bardugo is a winner: an action/adventure, young adult fantasy novel. Imagine James Bourne as a teenager with a gang, and you’ll understand the kind of story it is. This book is set in the same world as Leigh Bardugo’s Grisha Trilogy, but you don’t need to read the trilogy before Six of Crows. The story is about a group of misfit teens who struggle to stay alive in a city that doesn’t care if they live or die. There’s graphic violence and some sexual content. What I Loved: The characters are complex and engaging. I loved Nina from the beginning and found Kaz intriguing because he is so damaged. The plot has lots of twists and turns as well as edge of your seat, nail-biting action. The writing and storytelling are fantastic, and the dialogue is excellent. What I Wasn't Crazy About: The background for each character is told through flashbacks. Sometimes extensive flashbacks slowed the story. Have you ever watched a movie and the guys who's planning something, says, "Here's what we're gonna do" and the scene fades? Sure, it's done for suspense and surprise, but feels like cheating and withholding information. I'm not a fan of the strategy. Overall, this is a great book and a fun read. I'm looking forward to meeting these characters again in the second book, which comes out next month.

***Review posted on The Eater of Books! blog*** For anyone looking for an adventure (yay Bilbo), definitely give this book a chance! Make it your first Bardugo read. I personally think it's Bardugo's best book to date, but I know others really, really enjoyed the Grisha trilogy. Shadow and Bone was my favorite of that series, but I think Six of Crows is better. It's a fantasy novel with a lot of action, high stakes, developed and fun characters, and well-placed humor! Rating: 4 stars. A huge thanks to Kel from Booked Til Tuesday for passing her ARC to me. If you all get a chance, give this book a shot! If anything, the cover is gorgeous and would look great on your bookshelf!
