Peter Mathiessen's "Snow Leopard" is a journey to the spiritual land of Tibet in search of one of a very rare animal--the snow leopard. It is a journey where a man while being unsuccessful in his quest to see the rarest of cats, is however successful to find his spiritual side. He feels a kind of transformation inside him when he says "I am no longer that old person and not yet the new" (274). In Tukten, one of his companions to Shey Gompa he finds a man rooted to the earth. As he talks about Tukten, " In his life in the moment, in his freedom from attachment, in the simplicity of his everyday example, Tukten has taught me over and over, he is the teacher that I hoped to find: I used to say this to myself as a kind of instinctive joke, but now I wonder if it is not true. "When you are ready" Buddhists say , " the teacher will appear." In the way he watched me, in the way he smiled, he was awaiting me; had I been ready, he might have led me far enough along the path "to see the snow leopard". (287) Therefore, though his journey may look like an unfruitful one, it is not without the realization that there has been a kind of spiritual awakening which will eventually lead to the fulfilment of the quest--that of the sighting of the snow leopard in his later visits to the land of Dolpo, if ever there is one.
