As the regular forces rebuilt after their escape from Dunkirk, Britain began striking back at Nazi Germany through a small number of strategically placed spies and saboteurs, the Special Operations Executive. SOE has been a prime model for all subsequent resistance and subversion organizations, but the British have understandably remained vague about many details of this fascinating organization.
Britain's Public Record Office now reveals much new information, particularly about the training of agents. Organized by nationality, refugees from the various countries under Nazi control were trained at English estates which were isolated or near the type of terrain to be encountered in active operations. Lessons included disguise, surveillance, sabotage, burglary, close combat and assassination. This heavily illustrated work includes actual training manuals used during World War II.
