BRIDGES
“America is just too large,” she says,
we are
standing on the Williamsburg Bridge,
we are in love at this moment & she is wearing a loose
orange knit jersey dress with bare shoulders
& running shoes
I am leaning on my elbows looking down at the muddy
water
& I am thinking
about Chas. Ives & how he changed American music forever
& about Raymond Chandler’s novels
& about Maria Muldaur singing “Midnight at the Oasis”
& she is gesturing at what I’m not completely sure.
I’m ecstatic at this moment & I want to fly to California
for a few days. She’s restless,
charismatic
& has beautiful ankles.
Her father was in the restaurant equipment business
in Chicago. She is never happy.
