Synopsis
In the late 1890s, relations between the United States and Spain were crumbling. The focus of the problem was the island of Cuba, a Spanish colony. Americans were outraged by the harsh treatment of Cubans striving to attain independence. U.S. business interests balked as investments in Cuba collapsed. After an explosion on the U.S. battleship Maine, the Spanish-American War began.
